What Is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a specialist field of Acupuncture aimed at improving the skins appearance naturally. It is also known as acupuncture facial rejuvenation. It is a gentle yet effective alternative to western Cosmetic surgery, Botox, collagen injections, dermabrasion etc.

Although it is commonly called cosmetic acupuncture, the treatments are part of a specialty field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that use a combination of Acupuncture, Tuina (finger acupressure) Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Chinese Dietary therapy. It differs from all other treatments in that all treatments are unique to your constitution, based on your presenting TCM diagnosis. It is recorded during the Sun Dynasty nearly 800 years ago. However, it was not until the 1970’s that it received formal recognition in modern China.

How Does Cosmetic Acupuncture Work?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The cosmetic acupuncture techniques have been used for thousands of years. Even though these anti aging treatments are commonly named ‘cosmetic acupuncture’, the cosmetic treatments are a combination of TCM therapies such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Tuina (acupressure), cupping and moxa: called TCM Cosmetology in China. Authentic cosmetic acupuncturists use purely TCM diagnosis.

By using TCM diagnosis techniques such as pulse/tongue diagnosis, facial diagnosis and questioning it is possible to identify and treat the major organ imbalances in the body that cause ageing and skin imperfections. Wrinkles and fine lines appear on the face where there is an imbalance in the body. By treating the imbalances of the body a patient’s physical appearance and health improves. By inserting very fine, single use needles into the face and body a pleasant and relaxing sensation of Qi or energy is achieved by the needles. The needles are left for 20 to 25 minutes in place and then are removed. The face is massaged and needled to treat the external manifestation of the internal imbalance. The body is needled to directly treat the facial imperfections and internal organ disharmony.

Fourteen main meridians exist on the body, running bilaterally from head to toe. These channels connect all the internal organs of the body. All organs are interconnected in TCM. A weakness in one organ ripples through the entire body and creates further illness. The channels circulate blood and Qi (energy), throughout the body. Acupuncture points run along each of these channels and are selected according to the individual’s TCM diagnosis. Points are selected along channels of the internal organs that are experiencing disharmony. By needling these areas of weakness, the acupuncture stimulates Qi and blood to arrive at the problem areas of the body, thus alleviating the disease pattern. All treatments are unique in cosmetic acupuncture as no two people have the same problem just like human DNA differs from person to person.

The treatments stimulate collagen and elastin production and increase the flow of Qi and blood to the face as well as rebalancing the body’s internal organs and strengthening internal weaknesses. Skin generally looks firmer with better muscle tone, tighter pores, and better facial colour. How Many Treatments Do You Need?

Research conducted by the Journal of Clinical acupuncture found cosmetic acupuncture to be effective. The trial was on 300 people, 90% of patients saw results after one treatment.

12 treatments are recommended if you are just noticing fine lines and minor issues are appearing and have no major health problems. If you have already developed significant wrinkles and other more major issues it is recommended that you complete 15 treatments as there will be significantly more internal imbalances in the body and this requires more time and more comprehensive treatment.

To achieve long lasting results 15 weekly treatments are recommended. Every individual reacts differently to treatments. What Is The Best Age To Commence Treatments?

Treatment can be started at any age, but the ideal age is in the late twenties/early thirties, to prevent as many signs of aging as possible. Are There Any Side Effects?

Very occasionally minor and temporary bruising may appear at the site of needle insertion.
